Off and...crawling

Okay, I am now officially in the 21st Century. I may have come kicking and screaming, but I'm here.
My youngest daughter, Denise, has inspired me to "blog". And I do enjoy reading her blog. Now my oldest daughter, Michelle, is blogging as well. Surely, at least 3 out of Michelle's 5 daughters will blog. At least I hope so.
You see, just before Christmas I was racking my brain on what to get Lacey (21), Taylor (19), and Charli (14) as their gift. I wanted to give them something more personal than money.
Several months earlier I had thought about getting the girls some personal stationery, with their first initial on it, like I had as a young girl, and writing to them individually. It seemed to me that the art of writing letters by hand had died and I wanted them to experience writing a letter by hand and also receiving a hand written letter in the mail. I wanted an avenue to start sharing with them some of my childhood memories because, let's face it, I've always been OLD to them. ggg (stands for giggle, giggle, giggle...you'll see this often). But I procrastinated and didn't order the stationery. And yes, they got money as their gift.
Recently I remembered that my mother's siblings and my grandma sent a chain letter around to everyone. This really interested me as a kid because this way I could find out all the family news. Long distance phone calls were too expensive and writing paper and stamps worked just fine. Grandma would write, maybe include pictures, and mail the letter to Uncle Duane. He would add his letter to hers and send it to Mom, and so on. When the large envelope with everyone's letters got back to you, you would remove your old letter and insert a new one and away it went.
You didn't have to worry about writing right away but there were times when someone would call and ask if Mom was the one holding up the chain letters. That is how I became the letter writer for the Davis family. And I really enjoyed it.
Okay, so I thought I'd broach the subject of Michelle, Denise, Dane (unlikely but we'll ask anyway), Lacey, Taylor, Charli and maybe even Georgi joining me in a chain letter. Then reality hit me. With email and text messaging today, no one will want to take the time to hand write a letter. They would want to type it (faster, neater and spell check) and then probably email it. That, of course, defeats the whole purpose and beauty of hand written letters.
Then I got an emailed list of the 24 things that were becoming extinct. Guess what #9 was? Hand-written letters.
So. Enters the next best thing. BLOGS (an exclamation point is needed here but I'm told they are forbidden) And that is why I've decided to have my own blog and why I've named it "Reflections - Past, Present and Future" Musing as I Age. Look up 'musing' in the dictionary and let me know if you can find a better word for what I want to say as 'musing' doesn't sound right, even though it means what I want to say. And, of course, I still want to share with my grand daughters what I was like growing up and what the world was like at that time.
So there you have it. I sure hope this works okay or Denise will have to bail me out again. Honey, I promise not to kick and scream next time.
Love to all...

  1. Awesome Mom ~ great idea! I am blogging as you saw, not for exactly the same reasons, but close. That and it's better than talking out loud to myself. I've been told I get that from you... ;)
